Description
This was the dress I made for my sweet sixteen that was on 10/11/08. It was such a hit!
The "dress" is actually three pieces: the corset bodice (it's reversible!), the underskirt (for ultimate poof), and the red overskirt.
The bodice is made out of changeable silk/taffeta (red and black) on one side, and black cotton on the other. The stiffening is just rigalene boning because, while I wanted it to be corset-like, I still wanted to be able to MOVE and dance without being out of breath (still was out of breath, but that was probably from going crazy dancing to rave music for an hour and a half straight..
).
The underskirt is black taffeta - eight and a half yards, folded in half width-wise, and gathered all together by hand. The top of it is black cotton (about eight inches) so that it doesn't begin to poof at the very top (it made my hips look awkward in this case). It was inspired by the petticoats of the '50s.
The overskirt is a single layer of the most beautiful silk organza I found to match the taffeta of my bodice. I liked how it wasn't opaque but also wasn't TOO see-through. The waistband is made out of taffeta to match my bodice, and has three rows of top-stitching in black.
And even though I didn't make the shoes, I just HAVE to comment on them. They were most graciously loaned to me from my sister(: and are five inches tall! Technically four, because one of the inches is a platform, but still. I was surprised that even with all that height, they didn't look skanky - the class was still there (and I intended to look classy and elegant on my birthday night!). They're Steve Madden's and I am so in love with these shoes!! Thanks, sis!
I'll probably post more pictures of the dress (even though none are very good.. *tear*) later. And I know these pictures suck (I had to take them myself. P.S. These weren't from the day of the party), but I'll just say if you want to use them let me know and credit, as always. Even though they're not great!
Even though my birthday is actually on October 22, this party was so amazing and the dress DEFINITELY added to that! Hooray(:
